Step back in time and explore the captivating Conciergerie, a pivotal landmark in Parisian history.
This imposing structure, once a royal palace and later a notorious prison, offers a glimpse into the city's fascinating past.
Here's what awaits you:
- Rich History: Delve into the Conciergerie's evolution from royal residence to revolutionary prison, housing infamous figures like Marie Antoinette.
- Architectural Marvel: Explore the Grande Salle, a stunning hall known for its Gothic architecture and intricate details.
Amazing historic place where you can see Marie Antoinette’s cell. Informative displays in English and French teach a lot about the French Revolution. From the exterior, you’d never suspect how interesting it is inside the Conciergerie!
Although we have visited Paris many times this was our first visit to the Conciergerie. You first enter a great hall which is very impressive. Using the leaflet we picked up at the ticket booth we learned about the history of the building which was once a Royal Palace and eventually a prison. We learnt much about the first Revolution as we made our way round. My husband is especially interest in history so enjoyed our self-guided tour and also remembered that the Conciergerie is featured in Balzac's Scenes from the Life of a Courtesan. The prison area is interesting especially where Marie Antoinette was held where there is now a chapel.
My husband really wanted to visit so we did but there isn't much to see other than some stone walls. It isn't a castle now and I thought it was boring.
