My sister and I went to visit Marie-Antoinette’s jail cell. Beautiful and sad old building. It was once a medieval palace then it served as the antechamber of death during the reign of terror. Many were imprisoned here before meeting the guillotine. There are a few displays about the history of the revolution. There’s not much in the museum to view it’s more of a visit to walk where historically significant events occurred. When I asked any questions to staff about Marie-Antoinette’s jail cell I got the “this is a republic”speech and not to ask about royal history🤦♀️. Not helpful. The staff was so unwelcoming you could almost imagine how the prisoners felt trapped in there. Then when we went to use the bathroom a deranged cleaning lady came in swearing and screaming on her cell phone. Once she realized we were also in the bathroom she yelled and swore at us trying to demand that we open our stalls while we were going to the bathroom. She was very threatening and we were afraid she was going to throw a punch for no reason. We were really confused at her behavior. We were really frightened and left the bathroom ASAP. we complained to staff. She was so scary and made our entire visit unpleasant.i would not return.
This monument is worth a visit for all the history especially that of the Revolution as Marie Antoinette was imprisoned here. Take the tour of it all.
My daughter and I visited the museum and were immediately blown away by the cathedral ceiling and vast area in the ballroom. It was easy to imagine great banquets and pomp ad circumstance which would have surrounded the King. But as a prison, seeing where prisoners were piled on, sometimes 7 to a small cell, it became a depressed area to visualize. We enjoyed reading of all the history behind the great walls and spent about 2 hours digesting it all. It was interesting to learn that Marie Antoinette spent her last 70 some days there prior to her execution, that made it so real to me, the revolution and how it played out. Definitely a place to visit and take the time to read the information provided. After reading several other's reviews, and in retrospect, the histopad may have been a worthwhile
